Cryofracture Test Facility Permit

The Cryofracture Test Facility will be used to test cryocooling and crushing as a way to demilitarize waste munitions. The residues from this process will be burned in an open-grate furnace. The research data obtained at Dugway will be used in the design and engineering of a larger scale cryofracture demilitarization facility. This permit is currently available in the office of the Division of Solid and Hazardous Waste.

Issued Permits

The Dugway Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Part B hazardous waste storage Permit was issued in 1994, and reissued in 2005. The Permit authorizes operation of two Facilities, the Central Hazardous Waste Storage Facility and Igloo G. Conditions in the Permit include requirements for waste analysis, security, inspection, training, preparedness prevention, contingency, emergency response and operational parameters. The Permit also identifies solid waste management units (SWMUs) and hazardous waste management units (HWMUs) subject to RCRA corrective action and clean-up requirements.

Central Hazardous Waste Storage Facility

The Central Hazardous Waste Storage Facility (CHWSF) stores containerized hazardous waste from the Dugway Facility generated from maintenance, training and testing programs. The CHWSF is operating under the control of the Dugway Directorate of Environmental Programs and is managed by a contractor who is responsible for the daily activities at the CHWSF.

Igloo G Hazardous Waste Storage Building

The Igloo G hazardous waste storage building stores chemical agent hazardous waste munitions that are called range recovered munitions and munitions that will be used at Dugway for training and testing. Additionally, Chemical agents and industrial chemicals are stored at the Igloo G building.
